Ideas for independent bikes ride around Nantes

Take advantage of a cycling break to stroll around Nantes and its surroundings! We have put together a list of routes to inspire you during your next bike ride. The city of Nantes is rich in cycle paths and safe routes for walking with family or friends. Take the time to stop and discover cultural places such as the Machines de l’Île, the Chateau de Nantes or to stroll along the quays of the Erdre.

You can also escape for longer by going up the Erdre to Sucé sur Erdre, along the Sèvre towards Vertou or by setting off to discover the Nantais Vineyard... There are many possibilities, go for it!

5 walks in Nantes and its surroundings for the day/weekend

1) Sèvre Nantaise

From Nantes to Clisson this bike ride will take you to discover the banks of the Sèvre and its magnificent landscapes. Between the Chaussée des Moines in Vertou, the vineyards and the magnificent town of Clisson (see the Chateau de Clisson), this route is full of historic places and unique landscapes. Using the Nantes cycle paths and the Sèvre towpaths, the circuit will allow you to follow a good part of the river. You will then venture into the small roads in the heart of the wine estates of the Nantes vineyards.

Arriving in Clisson, it is possible to take a TER to return. This will save you time and allow you to enjoy the city for longer. Clisson Castle is a medieval castle to discover on the left bank of the Sèvre in Nantes.

2) Erdre by bike

Several routes allow you to discover this magnificent river by bike. From the city center you can opt for 2 walks: A rather short one, around 12 km which will allow you to follow both banks, crossing at the Jonelière bridge. This walk will allow you to discover the banks of the Erdre in the city. The second, 37 km round trip, takes you along the left bank of the Erdre between the city center of Nantes and Sucé-sur-Erdre. This walk will allow you to get out of the city and discover a wilder side of the Erdre.

3) La Loire by bike, from Nantes to Cordemais

From Nantes to Cordemais this itinerary, a little more complex than the previous ones, will allow you to discover two extraordinary works placed along the estuary. In Couëron you will discover the house in the Loire and in Cordemais it is the villa with fireplace that will surprise you. Between its two extraordinary houses you explore the marshes, particularly in Couëron, and discover relaxing nature.

4) The island of nantes

This shorter walk will allow you to discover or rediscover this extraordinary island, filled with works of art and history. Starting from the nave des Machines, you will first follow the northern arm of the Loire, that of the Madeleine. Once you arrive at the eastern tip of the island in the Beaulieu park, you will head west along the Pirmil arm. You will then arrive at the end of Quai Wilson where you will find yourself at the foot of a Titan of the island, one of the two massive cranes which bears witness to the industrial past of the place. To finish your walk, simply go back up the Quai des Antilles where you will discover Les Anneaux, one of the city's must-see works, and you will then return to your starting point.

5) Nantes at Lac de Grand-Lieu

For this walk, it is recommended to travel there or back between Nantes and Bouaye by train. This will allow you to save time and fully enjoy your ride.

This 21 km journey between Nantes and Lake Grand Lieu invites you to discover various unmissable sites along the way. In Nantes you can discover the Memorial to the Abolition of Slavery as well as the western part of the island with the machines and the Buren rings. You will then stroll through the small colorful streets of Trentemoult and discover the Signer Pendulum. The walk will then take you to the Lac de Grand Lieu house in Bouaye. For the more courageous, a 9 km round trip connection between Bouaye and Pierre-Aigüe in St-Aignan de Grand-lieu will allow you to obtain a unique view of the Lake.
